Developers also rely on it to test text rendering, overflow behavior, responsive layouts, and dark-mode typography before real content is available.

The History of Lorem Ipsum

The earliest known origin of Lorem Ipsum traces back to 45 BC, when Cicero wrote “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum.” This work is a five-book philosophical treatise exploring the ethical doctrines of the Epicurean and Stoic schools. Lorem Ipsum solves this by providing “visual white noise” — it looks enough like real text to simulate the reading experience, but is not comprehensible enough to cause distraction.

Additionally, Lorem Ipsum has character distribution and word lengths that closely approximate English, making it far more realistic than repeating “text text text” or using random character strings. Pirate Ipsum brings nautical adventure flair. Corporate Ipsum uses mock business jargon for corporate mockups. Cupcake Ipsum fills layouts with sweet treat names for playful projects.

However, there is a school of thought that advocates using real content from the start. Luke Wroblewski, a prominent designer, has written extensively about “content-first design” — starting the design process with actual content rather than placeholders. This approach helps the design serve real content better, rather than forcing content into a layout designed around Lorem Ipsum. That said, Lorem Ipsum remains indispensable in the early stages when content simply does not yet exist.

Best Practices for Using Placeholder Text

To get the most out of Lorem Ipsum and placeholder text in general, follow these guidelines. First, use text lengths that approximate the expected real content. If you know a product description will be around 100 words, generate 100 words of Lorem Ipsum rather than 500. This gives you a much more accurate picture of how the layout will look with real content.

• Replace as soon as possible: The moment real content is available, swap it in to catch layout issues early in the process.
