What Is Tempo?

Tempo is a payment blockchain built specifically for the agentic economy -- where AI agents autonomously conduct financial transactions on behalf of humans. Launching its mainnet on March 18, 2026, the project is backed by Stripe and Paradigm to solve a fundamental problem: AI agents are increasingly capable but lack secure, autonomous payment rails.

Tempo's core innovation -- the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) -- allows AI agents to submit transaction requests that are settled using stablecoins on the Tempo chain. Owners can configure spending limits and authorization tiers, letting agents operate autonomously within safe boundaries without per-transaction human approval.

What makes Tempo distinctive is its support for both fiat and cryptocurrency payments, bridging traditional and decentralized finance in a single platform. Morgan Stanley projects the agentic economy could reach $3 to $5 trillion by 2030, and Tempo is positioning itself as the central payment infrastructure for this trend.

Why Does This Matter?

Until now, AI agents could perform many tasks -- from booking flights to managing schedules -- but when it came to payments, they had to pause and wait for human approval. This is the biggest bottleneck in deploying AI agents at scale.

Tempo solves this by providing AI-native payment infrastructure. With Anthropic and OpenAI as integration partners, AI agents from the two largest AI ecosystems in the world will be able to transact directly on the Tempo chain.

▸ Imagine your AI agent booking flights, renting cars, and paying hotels -- all without you touching your phone. That is the future Tempo is building.

This technology directly connects to World ID and AI agent identity verification and the stablecoin and asset tokenization trend.

"We believe payments will be the first and largest blockchain application of the next decade -- but not human-to-human payments, machine-to-machine payments."

-- John Collison, Stripe Co-founder & Tempo Chairman

The involvement of Mastercard and Revolut ensures Tempo is not just an experimental blockchain but has direct connections to existing global payment infrastructure. Shopify and DoorDash bring real-world commerce applications where AI agents can place orders, make payments, and manage transactions end-to-end.

What Comes Next

With the mainnet now live, the immediate goal is expanding the developer ecosystem and integrating more AI agents from various platforms. Tempo is working with partners to build SDKs and APIs that make integrating payments into AI agents as simple as a few lines of code.

The broader context is also favorable: the GENIUS Act stablecoin legislation is moving toward passage in the US, creating a clearer regulatory framework for projects like Tempo. Other blockchains like Solana and World ID are also building AI agent infrastructure, showing this is an industry-wide trend rather than an isolated project.
