Marathon is a first-person extraction shooter (FPS) with PvPvE mechanics — combining Player versus Player (PvP) and Player versus Environment (PvE). Players take the role of Runners — mercenaries piloting cybernetic bodies — infiltrating abandoned settlements on the planet Tau Ceti IV to retrieve valuable resources and data, while surviving both AI enemies and rival Runners.
The core difference from traditional FPS: all the loot you carry has real value. If eliminated before extracting, you lose everything collected. Successful extraction = big rewards. Failure = lose it all. This mechanic creates psychological tension unlike any other genre — including competing titles like Deadlock and Valorant Masters Bangkok.
Each Runner class has a unique skill set suited for different team roles
Each mission begins when the Runner team drops into a zone on Tau Ceti IV. Locations contain loot, data terminals, and mission objectives — but also hostile AI and rival Runners hunting you.
Resources, weapons, classified data — all take up space in the Runner's limited loadout. Deciding what to carry back and what to leave behind is a key strategic decision in every run.
UESC Security Forces patrol with sophisticated AI. BT-like entities appear without warning. Enemy Runners from other teams also want the same loot — or want yours. Three threats simultaneously.
Extraction points appear on the map — but every tếam sees the same points. The race to the extraction zone is the game's most tense moment. Die before extracting = lose all collected loot.
// HIGH STAKES: Extracted loot is permanent — keep it, sell it, or upgrade between runs. Losing loot means it's gone forever. This mechanic creates genuine risk and authentic victory satisfaction.
Tau Ceti IV is a distant colony world where humanity once built an advanced civilization before catastrophe struck. The ruins of abandoned settlements, mysterious research facilities, and deep mining complexes create a dark, dangerous, and mystery-filled combat setting.
United Earth Space Council — the agency governing space colonies. After the disaster, AI units still patrol by their last orders. Attacks any Runner who trespasses their territory.
Mercenaries piloting cybernetic bodies. Runners can be squadmates or enemies from rival squads. Every Runner hunts for loot — and your loot is a prime target.
Entities that existed before the disaster — or perhaps were created by it. Appear randomly, unpredictably. More dangerous than UESC and Runners combined. Origins not fully disclosed by Bungie.

A 30-year journey from the original Marathon to the modern reboot
Classic Mac OS FPS — foundation of the Tau Ceti universe. Bungie's first introduction of UESC and the dark sci-fi world.
Expanded the Marathon universe with new planets and stronger enemies. Built a rich lore foundation.
The final chapter of the trilogy — concluded the old Marathon universe. Bungie then pivoted to a new project.
Revolutionized console FPS. Microsoft acquired Bungie. Halo became a billion-dollar franchise and defined Xbox.
Bungie went independent after splitting from Microsoft. MMO-style FPS with loot shooter elements — pioneering a new genre.
A polished sequel with 10 years of development and dozens of expansions. Peaked at 10M monthly active users before shutdown.
Return to roots. Bungie resurrects the Marathon brand as a modern extraction shooter, published by Sony.
In January 2026, Bungie officially shut down Destiny 2 servers — a game that had served its community for over 8 years. This decision came after Bungie announced that all development resources were being redirected to Marathon. It stands as one of the most controversial decisions in gaming history — millions of Destiny Guardians lost the virtual home they had inhabited for nearly a decade.
Over 500,000 signatures in petitions against D2 shutdown. Many Guardians held in-game virtual 'funerals' in the final days. Some refused to migrate to Marathon, but many others were curious about the new chapter.
Bungie committed to carrying some Destiny lore elements into Marathon — familiar characters referenced in Marathon lore documents. Destiny 2 achievements remain preserved in Bungie.net profiles.
Bungie wanted to launch a completely fresh universe instead of continuing Destiny 2's aging live service model. Marathon — their original IP — was the way to start fresh with a more modern design.
Bungie stated Marathon was designed with lessons from 10 years of Destiny — less content gating, community-first approach, and a clearer business model from day one.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the Marathon Invitational with a $250,000 prize pool in the first month of launch, attracting teams from North America, Europe, and Asia.
Top streamers like Shroud, Ninja, and DrLupo streamed Marathon from day one. Shroud — known for Escape from Tarkov — called Marathon 'the most polished extraction shooter ever made'.
The r/Marathon subreddit surpassed 500K members in the first week of launch. Bungie's official Discord server reached 800K members, becoming one of the largest gaming servers on Discord.
The community is actively developing the meta — optimal loot routes, Runner class combos, 6-player extraction tactics, and strategies for navigating PvPvE zones.
Honest assessment based on early launch data
▸ At $40, Marathon is $30 cheaper than standard AAA -- an attractive price for an extraction shooter
▸ r/Marathon subreddit hit 500K members in week one -- the most active gaming community of 2026
Verdict: At $40, Marathon is a solid bet if you enjoy tếnse, high-stakes gameplay and don't mind a steep learning curve. Extraction shooters aren't for everyone. But with Bungie's production quality and a rich lore universe behind it, this is the most compelling PvPvE title to try in 2026.
