In the early hours of April 17, 2026, Russia launched a simultaneous barrage of 44 cruise missiles and 660 attack drones at major Ukrainian cities -- the largest aerial assault of the year. Targets included Odesa, Kyiv, Dnipro, and other cities. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted approximately 95% of incoming targets, but those that got through caused devastating casualties.
At least 18 people were killed: 9 in Odesa, 4 in Kyiv (including a 12-year-old girl), and 3 in Dnipro. 17 apartment buildings were damaged in Kyiv alone. Russia claimed it was targeting drone production facilities, but most damage fell on residential areas.

Among the victims in Kyiv was a 12-year-old girl killed when missile debris struck the apartment building where she lived. President Zelenskyy called the attack "clear evidence that Russia deliberately targets civilians" and urged Western allies to provide additional air defense systems.
Early warning systems detected a massive missile launch from the Caspian Sea and Belarusian border. Air raid sirens activated across all of Ukraine.
Millions had to flee to shelters in the middle of the night -- the largest evacuation since the start of the year.
704 aerial targets including 44 cruise missiles and 660 Shahed drones entered Ukrainian airspace from multiple directions. Ukrainian air defenses fired continuously for nearly 2 hours.
The 95% interception rate was remarkable, yet the remaining 5% still caused 18 deaths.
Missiles struck central Odesa, destroying a 5-story residential building. Rescue teams recovered 9 bodies from the rubble.
Odesa has lost over 200 civilians to Russian strikes since 2022.
President Zelenskyy called on the world to provide additional air defense systems and announced he would raise the issue at the UN Security Council. He is touring Europe to secure aid.
Each Patriot system can protect a city -- Ukraine needs at least 7 more by military estimates.
Ukraine's air defense network -- including Patriot, IRIS-T, NASAMS, and Gepard systems -- shot down or neutralized approximately 670 of 704 targets. This was the highest interception rate ever achieved against a large-scale attack, according to Western military analysts.

Zelenskyy is touring Europe seeking air defense aid, as the largest attack of 2026 demonstrates the Russian missile threat has not diminished. The European Union condemned the attack, while NATO convened an emergency meeting.
"Every day without sufficient air defense is another day Ukrainians die. 95% interception is not enough when the remaining 5% kills children."
