What Is Slay the Spire?
Slay the Spire is a game that combines deckbuilding and roguelike dungeon climbing — every run is a completely fresh, randomized journey. Players pick cards after each combat, collect powerful relics, and battle increasingly difficult enemies and bosses on the path to the Spire's summit.
The original (2019), developed by Mega Crit Games, became one of the most influential indie games in history. It practically invented and defined an entire genre — the 'deckbuilder roguelike' — inspiring hundreds of games like Monster Train, Inscryption, Vault of the Void, and many more.

What's New in STS2
Early Access Details
According to Mega Crit Games, the Early Access version already contains more content than STS1 had at its original 2017 launch. Players can experience the full Act 1 with both themes, all 5 characters, and the 4-player co-op mode. Mega Crit has committed to regular updates based on community feedback throughout the EA period.
The 5 Playable Characters
Three beloved STS1 legends reworked from scratch alongside two brand-new faces:
Strength-focused warrior with offensive and defensive synergies. Fully redesigned with new mechanics and reworked card pool.
Poison and shiv assassin. Speed and card synergy reach new heights in STS2 with expanded shiv interactions.
Robot with unique energy orbs. The orb system expanded with more orb types and new channel mechanics.
A completely new character — unique mechanics and playstyle never seen in STS1. Details revealed in EA.
The fifth character — designed with 4-player co-op in mind, featuring team-support card archetypes.
Act 1: Two Distinct Paths
One of STS2's most exciting new features is the dual Act 1 theme system. Right at the start, players choose one of two paths with completely different environments, enemies, and challenges:
A wild, overgrown region with plant-based and forest creature enemies. Organic, mysterious and lush — a complete contrast to the Spire's stone aesthetic from STS1.
Dark urban sewage labyrinth with gang and mechanical enemies. A noir-crime atmosphere with enemy designs completely unlike the Overgrowth path.
4-Player Co-op: Next-Gen Deckbuilding
The 4-player co-op mode is STS2's most anticipated feature. Unlike some co-op games that simply place players in the same screen, STS2 builds a dedicated multiplayer system with cards and mechanics specifically designed for group play.
A fully separate co-op mode — doesn't change the solo experience. Each player has their own deck and character.
A new layer of cards exclusive to multiplayer — support allies, amplify tếam strength, and enable cross-deck synergies.
4-player combinations create possibilities impossible in solo. Cross-character synergy is the heart of co-op deckbuilding.
Bosses redesigned for teams — higher engagement, requiring role coordination and split responsibilities.
Importantly: the solo mode is completely unaffected by the addition of co-op. Solo players get the same experience as always — a lone, challenging, deeply strategic run.
▸ If you buy STS2 on Steam ($24.99), with 200+ hours average playtime for solo and co-op combined, your entertainment cost is just ~$0.12/hour.
Visual Upgrade: STS1 vs STS2
One of STS2's most obvious improvements is visual quality. STS1 had a simple but charming pixel art style — STS2 preserves that identity but significantly upgrades it with smoother animations, more detailed enemy designs, and more impressive skill effects.
- –Basic pixel art
- –Simple combat animations
- –Relatively small enemy designs
- –Minimal card effect visuals
- High-resolution 2D artwork
- Smooth and detailed combat animations
- Larger, more impressive enemy designs
- Vivid, colorful card effect visuals
Critical Reception
"Slay the Spire 2 in its Early Access state fully delivers... it already has more content than the original had at launch."
Early reception from players and critics has been overwhelmingly positive. Many note that STS2 in Early Access already feels far more complete than expected, particularly in terms of content volume and gameplay quality. Mega Crit continues their tradition of listening to community feedback and updating consistently.
The Legacy of STS1: Why It Matters
Slay the Spire (2019) wasn't just a successful indie game — it changed the industry. Before STS1, deckbuilder games and roguelike games existed separately; STS1 combined them perfectly and created a formula that hundreds of games still copy today.
It directly inspired games like Monster Train, Inscryption, Vault of the Void, Roguebook, Cobalt Core, and countless others. According to Wikipedia, STS1 sold over 3 million copies and holds a Metacritic score of 89/100 — a level of influence rarely achieved by indie games.
