How to Calculate Gold Prices
Gold prices in Vietnam are quoted per tael (lượng), where 1 tael equals 37.5 grams. To calculate the value of any gold quantity, you need three pieces of information: the gold type (SJC, Ring 9999, 24K, etc.), the weight in your preferred unit (tael, chi, gram, or troy ounce), and the current buy or sell price for that type. The basic formula is straightforward:
Value = Weight (tael) × Price per tael (VND)
Example: You want to buy 2 taels of SJC gold at the sell price of 134.5 million VND per tael. Total value = 2 × 134,500,000 = 269,000,000 VND. If you enter weight in grams or chi, the calculator automatically converts to taels before computing the final price.
Note that buy and sell prices always differ. The buy price is what the dealer pays you when you sell gold to them. The sell price is what you pay when buying gold from the dealer. The gap between these two is called the spread — it represents the dealer's profit margin.
SJC vs Ring 9999 — Investment Comparison
SJC gold bars and Ring 9999 both have 99.99% purity, but they differ significantly in pricing and liquidity:
- SJC — Designated by the State Bank of Vietnam as the national gold bar brand. Higher premium due to monopoly status. Best liquidity — every gold dealer trades SJC. Spread is typically 2–3 million VND per tael.
- Ring 9999 — Plain gold rings without decorative design. Priced 13–15 million VND lower per tael than SJC because there is no brand premium. Spread is typically 2–2.5 million VND per tael.
From an investment perspective, many analysts consider Ring 9999 more efficient because its price tracks global gold prices more closely and the spread is narrower. However, SJC has superior liquidity and wider acceptance for large transactions.
Gold Weight Conversions
Vietnam uses a traditional weight system for gold that differs from international standards. Understanding these units is essential for accurate price comparison:
- Lượng (tael) — The primary unit. 1 tael = 37.5 grams. This is the most common unit for gold price quotation in Vietnam.
- Chỉ (chi) — 1 chi = 3.75 grams = 1/10 tael. Often used for small gold rings and jewelry items.
- Troy ounce (oz) — 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams ≈ 0.829 tael. International gold prices are quoted in this unit.
- Gram (g) — Standard metric unit. 1 gram of 24K gold is the smallest commonly traded unit.
Important: A troy ounce is different from a standard (avoirdupois) ounce, which weighs 28.35 grams. When comparing international and domestic gold prices, always use troy ounces to avoid confusion.
Tips for Buying Gold in Vietnam
- Compare prices across dealers — Prices can vary by 200,000–500,000 VND per tael between dealers. Check SJC, DOJI, PNJ, and Bao Tin Minh Chau before buying.
- Buy during price corrections — Gold prices fluctuate significantly between sessions. A session drop of 1–2 million VND per tael is a good accumulation opportunity.
- Keep all receipts — Receipts prove gold authenticity, making resale easier and at better prices. Gold without receipts typically gets discounted 100,000–500,000 VND per tael.
- Consider Ring 9999 over SJC — With a 13–15 million VND per tael discount, Ring 9999 gives you more gold per dollar. Same 99.99% purity as SJC.
- Avoid going all-in at once — Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) reduces volatility risk. Buy 1–2 chi monthly instead of 5 taels at once.
Taxes and Fees When Trading Gold
In Vietnam, buying and selling physical gold (bars, rings) is VAT-exempt. However, there are several costs to be aware of:
- Buy/sell spread — The biggest cost. For SJC, the spread is about 2–3 million VND per tael. To break even, gold price must rise by at least the spread amount.
- Personal income tax — Profit from gold sales may be subject to 2% PIT on the selling price (not profit) for transactions through official channels. Small retail transactions are typically not tracked.
- Assay/verification fee — Some dealers charge a verification fee when you sell gold back, especially if the gold was not purchased from them. Fees range from 50,000–200,000 VND.
- Storage costs — If storing gold at a bank, safe deposit box fees range from 500,000–2,000,000 VND per year depending on the bank and box size.
In summary, the biggest hidden cost when investing in gold is the buy/sell spread. When calculating investment returns, always deduct the spread and other fees to determine actual profit. This gold price calculator shows both buy and sell prices so you can see the spread clearly.

About Calculators
Calculator tools cover everything from body metrics (BMI, calorie needs, macros) to financial planning (loan payments, compound interest, retirement savings) to everyday math (percentages, tip calculation, fuel economy). Each calculator implements the standard formula from a recognized body — WHO for BMI, IRS for tax brackets, the compounding formula A = P(1+r/n)^nt for interest — so you get the same answer as a textbook example.
Why it matters
Financial calculators in particular can save or cost you meaningful money. A compound interest calculator showing the difference between 5% and 7% annual returns over 30 years is the most motivating financial lesson most people ever see. A loan calculator revealing the true total cost of a 30-year mortgage versus 15-year stops many people from over-committing. The math doesn't change, but seeing it specifically for YOUR numbers is what makes it stick.
Privacy and safety
No calculator on ZestLab collects your financial or health data. Numbers you enter stay in your browser session and are cleared when you close the tab. We do not log, save, or analyze inputs. This is why none of our calculators require an account — they don't need one to work correctly.
Best practices
- For BMI, remember the formula treats muscle mass the same as fat — athletes often show 'overweight' without being unhealthy
- Compound interest math assumes consistent returns — real markets have volatility, so treat results as ceiling not guarantee
- Run loan calculators at BOTH your ideal rate and 2% higher to stress-test affordability against rate rises
- Tip calculators default to the payer's region convention (US 18-20%, EU 5-10%) — override if you know local custom
