What is Unit Conversion?

Unit conversion is the process of expressing a physical quantity in a different measurement system without changing the actual value of that quantity. For example, 1 kilometer and 0.621371 miles both describe the exact same physical distance — only the units of expression differ.

Metric vs Imperial Systems

The Imperial and US Customary systems trace their origins to traditional English units. They use irregular ratios: 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches. Notably, Imperial and US Customary have different volume units: 1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 liters, but 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. This distinction catches many people off guard when following recipes or comparing fuel economy across countries.

Scientific work almost universally uses SI units, while everyday measurements depend on the country and domain. For instance, aviation worldwide uses feet for altitude and nautical miles for distance, regardless of the country.

Temperature Conversion Formulas

Temperature conversion is unique because it involves both a multiplication factor and an offset — unlike length or weight conversions, which are simple multiplication. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin each have different zero points:

• Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Example: 37°C (body temperature) = 98.6°F.
• Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Example: 72°F (room temperature) = 22.2°C.
• Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15. Kelvin has no degree symbol because it is an absolute SI unit. 0 K = −273.15°C (absolute zero).
• Quick tip: For a rough estimate of °C to °F, double the Celsius value and add 30. The result is not exact but close enough for everyday use.

The reason temperature is special is that Fahrenheit and Celsius use different-sized degrees (a Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree) and different zero points (Celsius pegs 0 at the freezing point of water; Fahrenheit pegs 32 at the same point). Kelvin shares the degree size with Celsius but starts from absolute zero.

Volume (Cooking)

• 1 US cup = 236.588 ml (often rounded to 240 ml for cooking)
• 1 tablespoon = 14.787 ml (often rounded to 15 ml)
• 1 teaspoon = 4.929 ml (often rounded to 5 ml)
• 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters

Tips for Accurate Conversions

To ensure your conversion results are accurate and reliable, keep these principles in mind:

• Check the unit system: US gallons differ from Imperial gallons. Make sure you are using the correct system for your context — a recipe from a British cookbook uses Imperial cups, not US cups.
• Retain enough decimal places: When chaining conversions through multiple steps (e.g., miles → km → m), each rounding adds error. Keep at least 4 to 6 decimal places in intermediate steps, then round only the final result.
• Understand that temperature is different: Temperature conversion is not simple multiplication. Always use the complete formula rather than approximation when precision matters — especially in scientific, medical, or engineering contexts.
• Use dimensional analysis: Write out units and cancel them through fraction multiplication. Example: 5 km × (1000 m / 1 km) × (1 ft / 0.3048 m) = 16,404.2 ft. This method catches unit mismatch errors before they propagate.
• Verify with estimation: Knowing that 1 km is roughly 0.6 miles helps you quickly verify that a detailed conversion result is in the right ballpark. If your calculator says 10 km = 62 miles, you know something is wrong.
