Metric vs Imperial vs US Customary
Metric (SI)
Base-10 system used by most countries. Units: meter, kilogram, liter, Celsius. Prefixes like kilo- (1000x) and milli- (0.001x) make conversions simple multiplication.
Imperial
Used mainly in the UK for road signs and some measurements. Units: mile, stone, pint (Imperial). Shares many names with US Customary but volumes differ.
US Customary
Used in the United States for everyday life. Units: mile, pound, gallon (US), Fahrenheit. US gallon is ~83% of an Imperial gallon.
Key Conversion Formulas
Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
e.g.: 25°C = 77°F
Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
e.g.: 98.6°F = 37°C
Kilometers to Miles
mi = km × 0.621371
e.g.: 10 km = 6.21 mi
Kilograms to Pounds
lb = kg × 2.20462
e.g.: 70 kg = 154.32 lb
Liters to US Gallons
gal = L × 0.264172
e.g.: 3.785 L = 1 gal
Meters to Feet
ft = m × 3.28084
e.g.: 1.83 m = 6 ft
What is Unit Conversion?
Unit conversion is the process of expressing a physical quantity in a different measurement system without changing the actual value of that quantity. For example, 1 kilometer and 0.621371 miles both describe the exact same physical distance — only the units of expression differ.
Unit conversion is an essential skill across science, engineering, medicine, cooking, travel, and many other areas of daily life. From calculating medication dosages (mg to ml) to converting cooking temperatures (°C to °F), or comparing fuel prices between liters and gallons when traveling abroad, unit conversion comes up constantly. An online unit converter performs these calculations accurately and instantly, eliminating the risk of manual arithmetic errors.
Today, the majority of countries use the International System of Units (SI) based on the metric system, with base units such as meter, kilogram, second, and Celsius. However, the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar still primarily use the US Customary system (miles, pounds, Fahrenheit), while the United Kingdom uses a hybrid of both systems.
Metric vs Imperial Systems
The Metric system is a decimal measurement system developed in France during the 18th century. Its greatest advantage is consistency: each unit is exactly 10 times larger than the next smaller unit. 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters, 1 meter = 100 centimeters, 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters. The prefixes (kilo-, hecto-, deka-, deci-, centi-, milli-) apply uniformly to all types of quantities, making conversion as simple as multiplying or dividing by powers of 10.
The Imperial and US Customary systems trace their origins to traditional English units. They use irregular ratios: 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches. This makes mental arithmetic considerably harder than with the metric system. Notably, Imperial and US Customary have different volume units: 1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 liters, but 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. This distinction catches many people off guard when following recipes or comparing fuel economy across countries.
Understanding which system applies in your context is the first step to accurate conversion. Scientific work almost universally uses SI units, while everyday measurements depend on the country and domain. For instance, aviation worldwide uses feet for altitude and nautical miles for distance, regardless of the country.
Temperature Conversion Formulas
Temperature conversion is unique because it involves both a multiplication factor and an offset — unlike length or weight conversions, which are simple multiplication. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin each have different zero points:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit:
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Example: 37°C (body temperature) = 98.6°F. - Fahrenheit to Celsius:
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Example: 72°F (room temperature) = 22.2°C. - Celsius to Kelvin:
K = °C + 273.15. Kelvin has no degree symbol because it is an absolute SI unit. 0 K = −273.15°C (absolute zero). - Quick tip: For a rough estimate of °C to °F, double the Celsius value and add 30. The result is not exact but close enough for everyday use.
The reason temperature is special is that Fahrenheit and Celsius use different-sized degrees (a Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree) and different zero points (Celsius pegs 0 at the freezing point of water; Fahrenheit pegs 32 at the same point). Kelvin shares the degree size with Celsius but starts from absolute zero.
Common Unit Conversion Tables
Below are the most frequently needed conversions for everyday life, travel, cooking, and professional work:
Length
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm (exact, by definition since 1959)
- 1 foot = 30.48 cm = 0.3048 m
- 1 yard = 91.44 cm = 0.9144 m
- 1 mile = 1.60934 km
- 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km (used in maritime and aviation)
Weight / Mass
- 1 pound = 0.45359 kg = 453.59 g
- 1 ounce = 28.3495 g
- 1 stone = 6.35029 kg = 14 pounds (common in the UK for body weight)
- 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 pounds
Volume (Cooking)
- 1 US cup = 236.588 ml (often rounded to 240 ml for cooking)
- 1 tablespoon = 14.787 ml (often rounded to 15 ml)
- 1 teaspoon = 4.929 ml (often rounded to 5 ml)
- 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters
Tips for Accurate Conversions
To ensure your conversion results are accurate and reliable, keep these principles in mind:
- Check the unit system: US gallons differ from Imperial gallons. Make sure you are using the correct system for your context — a recipe from a British cookbook uses Imperial cups, not US cups.
- Retain enough decimal places: When chaining conversions through multiple steps (e.g., miles → km → m), each rounding adds error. Keep at least 4 to 6 decimal places in intermediate steps, then round only the final result.
- Understand that temperature is different: Temperature conversion is not simple multiplication. Always use the complete formula rather than approximation when precision matters — especially in scientific, medical, or engineering contexts.
- Use dimensional analysis: Write out units and cancel them through fraction multiplication. Example: 5 km × (1000 m / 1 km) × (1 ft / 0.3048 m) = 16,404.2 ft. This method catches unit mismatch errors before they propagate.
- Verify with estimation: Knowing that 1 km is roughly 0.6 miles helps you quickly verify that a detailed conversion result is in the right ballpark. If your calculator says 10 km = 62 miles, you know something is wrong.
- Use standard conversion constants: Always use conversion factors from authoritative sources (NIST, SI definitions) rather than memorized approximations. This tool uses SI-accurate factors to more than 10 decimal places for all conversions.

About Calculators
Calculator tools cover everything from body metrics (BMI, calorie needs, macros) to financial planning (loan payments, compound interest, retirement savings) to everyday math (percentages, tip calculation, fuel economy). Each calculator implements the standard formula from a recognized body — WHO for BMI, IRS for tax brackets, the compounding formula A = P(1+r/n)^nt for interest — so you get the same answer as a textbook example.
Why it matters
Financial calculators in particular can save or cost you meaningful money. A compound interest calculator showing the difference between 5% and 7% annual returns over 30 years is the most motivating financial lesson most people ever see. A loan calculator revealing the true total cost of a 30-year mortgage versus 15-year stops many people from over-committing. The math doesn't change, but seeing it specifically for YOUR numbers is what makes it stick.
Privacy and safety
No calculator on ZestLab collects your financial or health data. Numbers you enter stay in your browser session and are cleared when you close the tab. We do not log, save, or analyze inputs. This is why none of our calculators require an account — they don't need one to work correctly.
Best practices
- For BMI, remember the formula treats muscle mass the same as fat — athletes often show 'overweight' without being unhealthy
- Compound interest math assumes consistent returns — real markets have volatility, so treat results as ceiling not guarantee
- Run loan calculators at BOTH your ideal rate and 2% higher to stress-test affordability against rate rises
- Tip calculators default to the payer's region convention (US 18-20%, EU 5-10%) — override if you know local custom
